The Caves at Vallorbe (Canton de Vaud) in the Swiss Jura were opened to the public a quarter of a century ago. They afford a spectacular display of the beauty of natural rock, enhanced entirely by natural illumination. For millions of years the limestone layers were eroded by the Orbe, a river which runs underground before bursting from the rocks – seemingly as a natural spring of which the Vallorbe Caves are the faithful guardians. Inside these caves, which are among the most beautiful in Europe, there is a display – the “Fairies’ Treasure” in which more than 250 mineral samples from all over the World are exhibited in four domed rooms hewn from the natural rock.

These caves are the best I've seen so far. Gives the possibility to end perfectly a hike by discovering a well maintained and preserved - and rather impressive - 'collection' of stalactites and stalagmites. it takes about one and a half hour to make the guided tour.

Perfect venture for any time but even more so on a rainy Sunday. Kids or teens will be amused as will parents. There are are places for lunch nearby open on Sundays making it a well rounded outing in a natural, beautiful setting.

Over the last 25 years we have visited many grottes throughout France, not any reviewed on TA as these were before I joined. I can honestly say that these are by far the best. Great son et lumiere, excellent value at €11, (they take €s and SwissF) well managed walkways and points to note, and as others have said, you... More

You will walk through galleries above the underground part of the Orbe river. There are around 30 numbered posts with indicate where it worth stopping to admire the beauty of the best stalagmites, stalactites, columns, and other rock formations enhanced entirely by natural illumination which you switch on by pressing special button. It affords a spectacular display of natural rock.... More

They are not well publicised but well worth a visit. They are also quite difficult to find but once there, a fantastic spectacle. The walkways are very well made often high above the ground underneath. The lights guide you through the many caves highlighting things to see. And then the caves get bigger and become caverns, the final one was... More

Great exploration for all the family, secure the whole way around and good value. It is well cold inside and I would suggest jumpers as well as trainers on your feet as it can be quite slippy. The restaurant beside the Grottes serves lovely local food and drink, price and quality is good. You can walk from the train station... More

Visited with our two young kids…promising that there was some fairy stuff in the cave. Beautiful natural features. Very well paved underfoot and railings, beautifully lit - some of which can be activated by the visitor. Bring a warm sweater - it's about 10C inside. The walk up to the entrance is fantastic…a roaring river on one side, steep forested... More

To acces the area you can park your car easily and then have a nice walk on a path in the forest that leads to the cave. At the counter you can pay with cash (€ and CHF) or by credit card, then they lend you a written guide in your language that allows you to have the visit at... More

It is a really nice attraction for a weekend. The walk inside the grouts is really nice, the stalagmites and stalactites are really well preserved. At the end of the tour there is a nice collections of rocks form all over the globe.

Have you ever seen needles above your head about to drop from 300 feet (100 mtrs)? Have you ever walked for an hour in a natural underground formation (with modern lighting but no Starbucks!) and not felt claustrophobic? Cool (even in summer!) - go for it!
