We started from Ocotal to El Viejo Wet lands. We had a GPS from car rental which helped a lot. The drive from Ocotal to El Viejo is through unpaved and some times unmarked roads. It is not easy to get lost but feel nervous and wonder if you were lost.Once you know you are on right path, you can... More

After driving on unpaved and unmarked roads for about 20-30 minutes we arrived at the Hacienda el Viejo wetlands preserve. The Hacienda and grounds were remarkable but the wetland tour is the purpose of the trip. After the group collects you board a boat for a slow cruise down the river. The birds were great and the crocodiles, iguanas, and... More

This was one of the best activities we did while in Tamarindo for a week. We had a rental car, so decided to drive ourselves to El Viejo. The directions were exact and we found signs all along the way to help us out! We basically ended up having a private tour for the day. By using this tour, we... More

The canopy part is great, the food and views from the main property worth the trip--- 30 to 40 minutes on unpaved road.

My family of 6 had our own private tour. We did the river tour, home tour, and sugar mill tour plus a meal. The home and sugar meal tours were a little short, but they were very interesting, and we got to make our own tortillas. Kevin was our tour guide for these and for the river. He was very... More

Visiting El Viejo and taking the boat tour was one of our favorite Costa Rica memories. We had our own rental car and therefore had the opportunity to visit the hacienda and experience nature and Costa Rican hospitality without the crowds. The hacienda grounds are beautiful. The lunch we were served was some of the best food we had on... More

Our group of 3 just returned from a wonderful side trip to El Viejo Wetlands. We are staying at the Flamingo Beach Resort which offers a tour but we decided to drive our rental car. We had a little trouble finding it as we thought it was part of the Palo Verde National Park due to the tour description at... More

We drove here from the Guanacaste in just over an hour - thankful for the GPS as we were sure we were on the wrong road in the middle of nowhere until at last the signs appeared! The typical tico lunch at the Hacienda was delicious and the property gorgeous. Our family of 4 were the only ones on the... More

This was one of our favourite attractions in Costa Rica and one of the best nature tours we have ever done and that is saying something as it is something we do everywhere we go. Ask for Kevin Villega - he spoke perfect english, has an extensive and incredible fauna and flora knowledge, has trained in tourism and sustainability and... More

We toured the old ranch & the sugar mill. A very interesting tour where we made tortillas the old fashioned way on an open fire. We did the boat tour on the river & saw & photographed monkeys, crocodiles, parrots, macaws, iguanas, white tailed deer,& many other birds. The guides were excellent, friendly & knowledgeable. We also had the "typical"... More
