My family of 6 had our own private tour. We did the river tour, home tour, and sugar mill tour plus a meal. The home and sugar meal tours were a little short, but they were very interesting, and we got to make our own tortillas. Kevin was our tour guide for these and for the river. He was very... More

Visiting El Viejo and taking the boat tour was one of our favorite Costa Rica memories. We had our own rental car and therefore had the opportunity to visit the hacienda and experience nature and Costa Rican hospitality without the crowds. The hacienda grounds are beautiful. The lunch we were served was some of the best food we had on... More

Our group of 3 just returned from a wonderful side trip to El Viejo Wetlands. We are staying at the Flamingo Beach Resort which offers a tour but we decided to drive our rental car. We had a little trouble finding it as we thought it was part of the Palo Verde National Park due to the tour description at... More

We drove here from the Guanacaste in just over an hour - thankful for the GPS as we were sure we were on the wrong road in the middle of nowhere until at last the signs appeared! The typical tico lunch at the Hacienda was delicious and the property gorgeous. Our family of 4 were the only ones on the... More

This was one of our favourite attractions in Costa Rica and one of the best nature tours we have ever done and that is saying something as it is something we do everywhere we go. Ask for Kevin Villega - he spoke perfect english, has an extensive and incredible fauna and flora knowledge, has trained in tourism and sustainability and... More

We toured the old ranch & the sugar mill. A very interesting tour where we made tortillas the old fashioned way on an open fire. We did the boat tour on the river & saw & photographed monkeys, crocodiles, parrots, macaws, iguanas, white tailed deer,& many other birds. The guides were excellent, friendly & knowledgeable. We also had the "typical"... More

We drove to El Viejo from Paraiso, about an hour and a half, and were well rewarded with a knowledgeable guide (Kevin) and boat captain (Dennis). My wife and I were the only visitors in our tour, and during two hours on the river we saw crocodiles, many birds, howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys, raccoons, and plenty of lizards. We... More

This is a very well done tour - calm, not crowded, yet very interesting. We saw white faced monkeys ( our guide called them the bad boys of the jungle,) howler monkeys, crocodiles, a variety of birds, many iguanas. I also enjoyed the demonstration of sugar cane crushing and tortilla making. The casado lunch was very tasty, too. The grounds and... More

Its quite an adventure to reach this place...unpaved roads is an understatement. We are a family of three paying $60:00 pp for 2 meals each and a boat and wetlands tour. Our guide 'Kevin' was really nice and he did a wonderful job. We saw crocodiles, iguanas, bats, and scarlet macaws. It was just us and one other couple so... More

This private reserve abuts the Palo Verde National Park, with only a river separating the two. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was interested in his area and work. The estate house was very impressive, also. Our tour was in the off season, and it was just the two of us on the guide boat. We saw monkeys, crocodiles, bats... More
