Honestly after traveling for 6 days, though the scenery of Hokkaido was beautiful, nothing really "wow" me till I stepped foot on the viewing platform of Lake Mashu. This is one beautiful lake with clear blue water. If you are visiting Lake Akan area, this is a place not to be missed!

Super beautiful lake, formed in the crater at the top of a volcano. If you're short on time, this is the better choice compared to seeing Lake Kussharo nearby.

Its a very beautiful clear blue water in an active volcano caldera spanning about 6 or 7 km end to end. There are 2 viewing points and the panoramic view is totally awesome. Parking for cars and rest rooms. The area is closed during winter time.

We went to both Deck 1 (which has all the facilities) and Deck 3 (to view the whole lake). Overall, the lake was nice but not spectacular so in my opinion, it is not a must-go place. While there isn't any entrance fee to enter the area, if you want to park here, you will need to pay 500 yen.... More

Lake Mashu is just as beautiful as everyone says. We were lucky enough to visit on a sunny day with clear blue sky and it was simply stunning. After a brief stop at viewpoint 3, we parked at viewpoint 1 (parking fee is now ¥500). To the right of the shop is the start of the hiking trail and it... More

We only saw it from the 1st observatory lookout (no one is allowed by the lake), but the place, the view and its story will be one of the highlights of our journey in Hokkaido. Don't forget to visit the eco-museum at Kawayuonsen to get explanations if you need them in English.

There is a term "Mashu blue" when the sky is clear and sunny. A nice, quiet morning hike starts at the south end of the parking lot of "Observation Point 1". We were not up to the full hike, but had some great views of the lake not visible from the observation station. You cannot get down to the lake... More

The first time we drove up to the lake it was cloudy :( We tried again another day when the weather was more promising and voila we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the lake. The security guy at the ticketing booth recognised us from the day before and allowed us in without having to pay again! The still... More

Love Lake Mashu. Mysterious yet the calming effect gives travelers an everlasting impression. The entire atmosphere was serene and peaceful. Since Lake Mashu is always foggy(it says that if you can view Lake Mashu on a fog-less day, you could strike a jackpot!), one could smell the purity in the air. Will return someday.
