Love Lake Mashu. Mysterious yet the calming effect gives travelers an everlasting impression. The entire atmosphere was serene and peaceful. Since Lake Mashu is always foggy(it says that if you can view Lake Mashu on a fog-less day, you could strike a jackpot!), one could smell the purity in the air. Will return someday.

How amazing is it! We were lucky can view the lake clearly. Please go to Level 3 Observatory Desk if you want to view the whole lake and nice scenery! The parking was free here. For level 1 car park we also enjoyed the free parking because we already paid ¥410 at Lousan, the sulphur mountain. There are many local... More

I have been wanted to visit Lake Mashu, Lake Akan and Lake Kusharo in one day. I was in Abashiri and looking for a day tour to the 3 Lakes. Abashiri does not have any tour to the Lakes. Only in Kushiro that I could get a day tour by Akan Bus, from terminal beside JR Kushiro Station. Lake Mashu... More

You can have a nice view from the lake by going here. The only problem is that you cannot go down, so you just have a view from the top. The parking is 410 yen at one spot, and free at the other one, but you should do both.

The viewing decks (1&3) are on the rim of caldera, looking down to the lake far below. Deck 1 is more popular with shops, toilets etc but paid carpark ¥410. It is lower than deck 3 and therefore has a better chance to miss the fog. When we were there, deck 3 was shrouded in thick fog/frost and the lake... More

Was lucky that the skies were clear on my visit, and there wasn't any fog that obstructed my view of the lake. The lake was still and not frozen (I wonder why, as it was very windy on my visit), and the surroundings were very serene. A picture perfect moment with the beautiful lake and clear blue skies, surrounded by... More

This is probably the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. Its mysterious, with mist clinging onto its steep sides. You cant get to it but it can be viewed from 2 observatories. I can only imagine what it looks like when the sun shines Simply stunning

Lake Mashu is a caldera lake, and it is found at the summit of a potentially active volcano (according to my guide). My guide also explained to us that Lake Mashu is touted as one of the clearest (i.e. transparent) lakes in the world, it used to be the clearest, but was dethroned by some other lake recently. Unfortunately, visitors... More

Totally worth to see it. If we have a car, we would stay there for half day and come back at night to view the star. Too bad the shuttle only give us 30 mins.
