You can have a nice view from the lake by going here. The only problem is that you cannot go down, so you just have a view from the top. The parking is 410 yen at one spot, and free at the other one, but you should do both.

The viewing decks (1&3) are on the rim of caldera, looking down to the lake far below. Deck 1 is more popular with shops, toilets etc but paid carpark ¥410. It is lower than deck 3 and therefore has a better chance to miss the fog. When we were there, deck 3 was shrouded in thick fog/frost and the lake... More

Was lucky that the skies were clear on my visit, and there wasn't any fog that obstructed my view of the lake. The lake was still and not frozen (I wonder why, as it was very windy on my visit), and the surroundings were very serene. A picture perfect moment with the beautiful lake and clear blue skies, surrounded by... More

This is probably the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. Its mysterious, with mist clinging onto its steep sides. You cant get to it but it can be viewed from 2 observatories. I can only imagine what it looks like when the sun shines Simply stunning

Lake Mashu is a caldera lake, and it is found at the summit of a potentially active volcano (according to my guide). My guide also explained to us that Lake Mashu is touted as one of the clearest (i.e. transparent) lakes in the world, it used to be the clearest, but was dethroned by some other lake recently. Unfortunately, visitors... More

Totally worth to see it. If we have a car, we would stay there for half day and come back at night to view the star. Too bad the shuttle only give us 30 mins.

We completed the walk from the 1st (I think) observation area, where all the souvenir shops & cafes are with a big car park. The walk is linear to the top of the next crater and back. The views are spectacular and the last part of the climb quite strenuous. We did it on a sunny day in shorts and... More

Although less famous than Lake Akan, Lake Mashu is definitely the most stunning of the 3 lakes of the Akan National Park. Whilst Lake Akan offers lakeside resorts and restaurants, Lake Mashu has maintained its exclusiveness and tranquility. We made our first attempt to see the lake by going along the western route (the more popular route). Too bad it... More

We visited early May but it was still snowing. What a beautiful sight! See it to believe it! As with all national park in Hokkaido, there was no admission fees. Parking was a standard JPY 410 and it covered parking at both Lake Mashu and Izo Zan (sulfur mountain) that was 20 minutes away by car.
