My boyfriend cycles the entire 98 mile long route between winchester and Eastbourne probably around once a month. It takes him around 9 hours and he loves the challenge of all the hills and steep climbs he faces. Very much recommended

First time cracking the South Downs Way in the saddle with a mate and we weren't disappointed! Stayed at the cycle-friendly Guesthouse East in Eastbourne before setting off en route. Hills were challenging but the views made it worth the effort - we will be back!

We left home in Hertfordshire on our mountain bikes and took the train to Winchester via Clapham Junction. Left Winchester at 14.00 from King Alfred Statue and did the first 14 miles to Meonstoke. A good climb early on and a gentle induction. Stayed at the Bucks Head and next day did 35 miles. Some climbs were too steep to... More

We finished the whole trail in October 2014, having spent nine days walking from Winchester to Eastbourne. the trail is largely well marked, and there are great views along most of the trail on fine days. Be prepared for ups and downs most days. Most of them are not steep, but you still need a lot of stamina.

Proud to have finished the 100 mile South Downs Way! Excellent baggage transfer service by South Downs Discovery made it possible for my husband and me to walk the trail carrying just day packs. We hiked it in 9 days and enjoyed remarkably nice weather, beautiful scenery, and wonderful people. This long distance trail is well signed and easy to... More

Not unfit but certainly not fit enough....knew it was steep in places but it was quite challenging. Blessed with fab weather, fortunately, which made it so much better. Really lovely scenery on most of the trail but many of the paths (as well as bring steep!) were quite loose, chalky stones which made both ascent & decent a little tricky,... More

I did this leg of the trail today, walking the opposite direction most people would. It took about 6 hours at a leisurely pace. There are some challenging spots particularly along the seven sisters. For me and my bad knees the steep down hills were more of an issue then the steep up hills. If your going to do this... More

Having both cycled and walked the route I would highly recommend it as either a walking route or cycle route be prepared and make sure you fill up water at every chance.
