Totally worth going to when in Guatapé. After paying the 10,000 CPO entrance fee you get to climb 649 stairs (a decent workout!) in order to enjoy some wonderful views from the top. Don't go here if you want to avoid the tourist crowd...

We just returned from visiting La Piedra in El Penon Park from Medellin. I am covering ligustics as that seems to vary a lot here. You do not need an enormous back pack of supplies, just water and cameras. Food, drinks, shopping all there. Taking the public metro and bus is the least expensive and not that difficult. We opted... For 12.000 COP you can climb the 750 stairs to the top of the rock. From there you will have a great view over the surrounding area, which is just beautiful. A highly recommended activity to do! Keep in mind that the last years this spot became a real tourist activity. So you have to pay 12.000 COP to climb... More

Can you tell, I grew up in Chicago and the Prudential Buiding and the Hancock Tower were as big deals as the Empire State Building? The 774 stairs to the top took this 67 year young gypsy about 30 minutes. The view of the region is spectacular. It also humbling to know that towns were destroyed in the building of... More

Was a little nervous about all the steps but it was easier and faster than expected. The views are amazing. We hiked up early and were mostly solo, stopping and resting as needed no problem. Highly recommend this if you are anywhere near. We were up and down in about two hours with plenty of time on top for photos.... More

The view from the top is amazing, you'll be able to take some amazing panoramas, and the climb feels like an amazing exercise. It's 740 steps until the very top including the tower. The stairway is pretty uneven (some steps higher than others) and feels a bit steeper than a normal one, peace yourself going up and exercise some patience... More

There are such beautiful mountains around Medellin...I don't understand the fascination with this dirty looking hunk of rock. Rickety stairs...don't seem safe to climb up!

Guatape is really easy to get to from Medellin, simply go to the north bus terminal and ask for a bus. After two hours, you can ask the driver to drop you off at the Peñal. You are in vacation so go at your rythm going up the 740 steps. The view is definetely worth it and one of the... More

I was worried that our twin 4-year-old boys would not be able to do this hike but they did it just fine and walked the entire way up by themselves. The steps are numbered and they enjoyed hiking to the next number. The steps are irregular - some skinny, some steep. There aren't handrails in all locations on the way... More
