It is a nice and curious place to look at from a distance but of course you should climb to the top of el Penon to admire surroundings. Great views!

Being from Germany I fell immediately in love with this magical place and bought a vacation home directly at the lake, the views from top are worth the exercise

It's ok, just a big rock really. Obviously you get good views from the top. But as big rocks go, it nothing spectacular - not a patch on Sugarloaf, for example. ~650 steps I believe - took me 8 minutes.

When you first see the massive rock of El Penol in the distance, it is impressive. However as you get closer and closer, and are able to see the individual stairs leading up to the top of the rock, it is downright overwhelming. You think to yourself, I am going to climb up THAT?? But don't worry, take it slow.... More

If you have ever climbed the Eiffel Tower on foot, you will then find some sort of similar staircase sensation. This place is an enormous rock (or meteorite) in the middle of the countryside. The view from the top is really nice and the air is the purest.

The size of the Rock is HUGE. The 740 steps you take to get to the top can be tiresome, exhausting, but also, fun. Taking your time and enjoying the views as you ascend to the top, then rewarding yourself with a photo of yourself on the top:) This is a 'MUST DO' activity. Don't miss it! Jon

El Penon is an astounding granite monolithic formation that juts out of the hillside and is visible from the entire valley. You can visit as a daytrip from Medellin, but be sure to spare some time for the beautifully restored city of Guatape. No matter where you look, the rock is there, along with the scariest looking set of stairs... More

Guatape is a cute little town, colorfully painted, with a number of restaurants. Pretty average view of the lake (we spend lots of time on lakes where we live and this wasn't that special). The lakeshore is crappy. It's rocky with some broken glass, full of rental guys trying to get you out on their boats. We tried to rent... More

La Piedra is a rock jutting about 200m from the ground on top of a hill near Guatape. La Piedra is definitely one of the things to see around Medellín. The 740 steps to climb are a small price to pay for a beautiful view of Lake Guatape. The 12000 COP entrance fee is a little high but that's just... More
