not ovedrawn on catholic saga, it is still a decent escalated perambulation with a fair degree of pilgrimaging. It reminds one of Meteora or Mount Athos in Greece but lacking the dramatic essence. It is the jewel of the peninsula in terms of attribution, identity and sanctification but little else. The grotto cave structure and the elegant access to add to the overdeclared significance. It is properly supported, lift available for us the less able climbers but still..nothing to write home about when compared to the Colombian Salt Mine Cathedral which is again overdetermined by its cultural religious significance. The hill with its topographical prominence is all the money and the views to and especially from

We visited the Sanctuary during a very busy and packed out Sunday mass. We joined a long queue and it took a while to reach the Sanctuary but it was well worth it. It’s a spectacular church hewn out of rock. Interesting gift shop. The only negative was that we felt as though we were intruding into peoples devotions.

We were travelling from Naples to Monte Gargano, so we made a stop in Monte Sant'Angelo to see this wonderful church. It looks like a common church from outside, but the interior is really something you can't see often. So don't miss it if you are nearby.

When we came to this shrine it was incredibly crowded but it was worth battling the crowds to come to the cave where St.Michael appeared! We prayed the Consecration to St.Michael which I can’t recommend enough. They don’t allow you to take pictures in the shrine so I recommend buying a postcard.

Our guide told us before we went that she had taken people who cried when they visited. The cynical atheist in me smiled quietly at such nonsense. But... The whole atmosphere despite the tourist numbers and flash cameras was spine tingling. The art, the architecture and the layout combine to give a real sense of place. If you are a non believer just enjoy it for those reasons. If you are of faith you could get a really profound experience from the visit.

We came here at the suggestion of our taxi driver. We are so glad we took his suggestion. We only wish we could have allowed more time to see everything and to attend mass.

When entering, you feel as you are transcending time. Wandering down the stairs to the main sanctuary, you pass frescoes and even age-old grafitti (like 1000 years old).

Arriving at the sanctuary, it is amazing to see the grotto, with doors leading to other chambers (chapels, sacristy, etc.). The statue of St. Michael is fantastic. The many altars are beautiful and each is worthy of study. Remember to look up to see Angevin Nave rising above, and the 1000 year old bronze doors...and all around you.

We were able to see some of the associated spaces such as the devotional displays from people who have experienced St. Michael's intervention.

We did not get to experience the space fully as we were rushed for time. We only had an hour...we should have had several. Not only did we need more time to see everything, we needed time to get out of tourist mode and into devotional mode. We could not do that and I regret that.

The surrounding town is well worthy of a visit too.

This place is famous because many pilgrims and the crusaders who went to Jerusalem in the Middle Age, first went here to pray St.Michael. For this reason, they left a track of their hand on the wall, hoping to going back home.
Going down the ladders which take you to the cave where, according to the tradition, St. Michael apparead, you are thrown in that period, through prayers and candles in the shadow.

Craved in the mountain, reachable through an underground tunnel, impressive santuario. Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

Gosh, what a pretty holy area. We just managed to sneak in before they closed for lunch; the museum was already closed, but it was a short, magical visit to wander down the stairs and into the holy cave. There's a great statue or representation of Archangel Michael, with his gold wings and a crown. Worth a visit, I think.

Of course, this is the very reason why people visit this small city tucked away somewhere up the hills on Gargano. The special atmosphere, the many chapels and additional attractions "around" the sanctuary will not leave you unimpressed, apart from the purely religious aspect of your visit...
