Quiet beach away from vendors and general crowds in Tamarindo. One restaurant. No chairs or umbrellas to rent. Shade is scarce except at restaurant. But it's definitely a nice break off beaten path of touristy areas.

This was a nice quiet surf beach with a few amenities. Spanish skills a plus here because this is not setup to be a mainstream tourist area which is part of what makes it nice.

Great beach, quiet and great for surf. Awesome if you have kids. Bring your food or expend a little and buy it at Lolas. I drove a sedan from Tamarindo and it took me 30 min (18 km-20km) with a 4x4 it can take you 15min.

On day 3 of our trip when we went to Avellanes. There was something very magical about this beach. Pura Vida! We were staying in Tamarindo and heard there was good surf in Avellanes so we decided to make the drive (we had a vehicle, but they have shuttles/vans that go there daily for like $5). It was well worth... More

We made the Hour drive to Avellanes. Lolas was closed on Easter Sunday, we didn't get to try her food or see her pet pig. Cool remote spot in Costa Rica if want to try surfing or enjoy a beautiful beach. The road is rough and narrow, DONT turn back its worth it!!

Rough road in but worth the trip. Gorgeous beach for surfers and shell collectors. Lola's is a must for a bite and beverage!

Drove here from Tamarindo March 2015. Tried to take a northern shortcut but the puddles were too deep for our rental truck. Instead detoured via Playa Junquillal. Loved the Costa Rica 'massage' road. Aka washboard. Lolas was closed this day but no worries. Lots of vendors. Didnt surf but splashed around a lot. This beach is for everyone. And the... More
