The beach less travelled

We fell in love with this beautiful beach, so close to Tamarindo without the large crowds and pestering vendors pedaling unwanted junk.

Love this beach! It did take about 40min to get to from Tamarindo on a lot of bumpy roads but it was well worth it. It is a secluded beach with not many people. We went this past Monday and Lola's was closed which was probably why it was so quiet. We got to pet Lolita (pig that replaced Lola)... More

This is a nice beach and better than JW Mariott. The road is mostly gravel/dirt but worth the trek. Ample amount of trees for shade. We were there right before high tide and surfers started to take over the area were swimmers were wading. Somehow we shared and all,is good

Somewhat difficult to get to, but you !MUST! Beautiful crystal clear water and mostly rock free, body surfing fans go there.

Not far from Tamarindo is Playa Avellana. If you are not too crazy about waves and the rip tide, try out this beach. It has a lagoon surrounded by rocks which protects you from the waves. The water is crystal clear and very warm and refreshing. You can keep a table under the shade for the day and try out... More

The beach is fairly wide and long, but not very unique in Costa Rica. The reason to go to Playa Avellana is Lola's Restaurant! There isn't much shade there.

I have rented a car for the week and did most beaches from Las Catalinas to Avellana and its one of the prefered ones save for the dust road to get there.

The drive from Tamrindo didn't seem all that bad to us and was well worth it. There is far more shade than at Tamarindo beach, no one trying to sell you things and was less windy. If you're staying in Tamarindo it's worth the trek. (We had a car but there is a shuttle between the two). The tide pools... More

About 30 minutes drive from downtown Tamarindo. The beach is beautiful and more quiet than Playa Tamarindo with a good amount of shaded areas to escape the punishing Costa Rica sun. It's nice to have Lola's restaurant tucked into the groves for a fresh juice or snack. We paid $12 R/T per person for a "surf shuttle" from downtown Tamarindo.... More
