The street of old buildings alongside the Tanjiang river seemed to be the hub of activity and was very interesting. Many vendors there selling dried fish and dried mandarin peel in addition to drinks and snacks. Most visitors were Chinese with few Western tourists. There is no entry fee to Chikan.

Now if you are only having a daytrip to Kaiaking and their Diaolou's, then i would recommend you to skip Chikan's European style street. But if like us, you are planning on visiting Kaiping's watchtowers over a few days I would strongly recommend you to stay in Chikan instead of Kaiping itself for exploring the surroundings. Why? Because Chikan is... More

Chikan European style street has souvenir shops, food stalls making the place filthy. But anyways you dont have many options in Kaiping so might as well visit it.

Nice small tourist shops on both sides of the river. A library and a movie park at the end of the street. A nice place to spend an hour or so.

The scene is reminiscent of old Penang, Malacca and Singapore. Visit before it gets overwhelmed by domestic tourists drawn there by the movies that were made there.

Heading to Chikan town was a simple affair as we took bus #6 in Kaiping county at a cost of 3 Yuan per person. We jostle with the morning crowd onto the bus. It was pretty obvious that most people on the bus knew each other as they interact in lively conversations, and whenever someone have alighted, the next boarding... More

Chikan was the center of things in terms of economy in kaiping all the way up until the communists’ takeover. Now, the center of commerce is in downtown Kaiping. Being a vibrant economy for such a long time, Chikan has many treasures. The architecture was built in a style unique to Chikan. Overseas Kaiping people and Tai Shan people came... More

The street is rather short and there is not much activity going on when we were there. To make matter worst, the water level was low and we could see all the rubbish on the river bed. Check around and decide if it is worth the trip there. If you don't expect too much, it can be fun to walk... More
