Chikan was the center of things in terms of economy in kaiping all the way up until the communists’ takeover. Now, the center of commerce is in downtown Kaiping. Being a vibrant economy for such a long time, Chikan has many treasures. The architecture was built in a style unique to Chikan. Overseas Kaiping people and Tai Shan people came... More

The street is rather short and there is not much activity going on when we were there. To make matter worst, the water level was low and we could see all the rubbish on the river bed. Check around and decide if it is worth the trip there. If you don't expect too much, it can be fun to walk... More

Given the number of tourists that come through chikan, you'd think the provincial government would allocate some funds towards street cleaning and garbage removal... As it is, chikan is very old, and not in a nice way ... very dirty, very run-down, very very crowded with big domestic tour groups ... Yes, there is a movie park, but not particularly... More

This old street and movie town is more old than charming. Houses outside the movie town are in pretty poor condition. However the street is like a busy market place and you can even make a short canal cruise in traditional wooden boat. You can also visit the movie town but it's not really big and there is not much... More

The tour buses pour in at around 9am so if possible, go early. We were there at 8am and enjoyed a leisurely stroll through a near-deserted town. Photography is also perfect at this hour. Because the shopkeepers are starting to set up shop and the locals are out buying fresh produce at the local street market (located in the back... More

I didn't have a guide, but had a car and driver. It's possible he took me to the wrong part of town, but I don't think so. If they cleaned this place up, it would be a fine attraction. The building have a lot of character and the whole place has the feeling of being untouched by time. I like... More

Chikan historic town belongs to "diaolou" area of Kaiping. Walking along the streets with a lot of old good-looking houses (unfortunately) poorly maintained is relaxing. Try to walk to Situ family library and Red Building (which is now part of high school). We came here from Kaiping with "taxi" (50rmb one way).

First time to visit this place, the streets are full of very old buildings, the people are still live in a old way..simple. Once you passed the buildings and go to the main street along the river, there are many stalls over there mainly selling the local and traditional food. Like pan-fried tofu with fish paste, green pepper and eggplant.... More

The whole town is full of western stile buildings. It's nice to see how the overseas emigrants would bring their ideas of what was being built abroad and translate them into their hometown facades
