This really is a nice aquarium for being in the middle of the city. It cost 2,000 yen per adult and takes about an hour to go through. There are definitely nicer aquariums out there for a cheaper admission, you just won't find them in the middle of Tokyo.

Located at the top of Sunshine City, the aquarium is perfect for a family visit. With an outdoor and indoor section along with regular shows and animal feedings it's easy to spend a few hours without getting bored. The food in the cafe is quite good and not very expensive and the gift shop has everything you need for that... More

While in Tokyo we planned to go to the Shinagawa aquarium; but it was closed for renovation so we headed to Sunshine Aquarium. It was about a 30 minute walk from the Ikebukuro JR Yamanote Green line station. Once you arrive at Sunshine City it is challenging to find the aquarium. There are multiple signs with arrows indicating Sunshine Aquarium... More

This aquarium is so lovely! Like almost everything the Japanese do, it's cleverly laid out and so beautiful, with attention to detail. I spent several hours there, and it was very relaxing and entertaining. I highly recommend this attraction in Tokyo.

We started the day looking for the pokemon center. The first place we visited had been shut down and moved to the same mall as the aquarium. As it was a rainy day and in the area, we figured why not. While nice enough to pass a few hours, as others have mentioned, it's not a "destination aquarium". We wouldn't... More

The aquarium was well laid out and there were plenty of aquatic animals to see. Kids would love it and it's even adult friendly! Definitely worth the trip and money!

Its really pricey but i guess being on top of a mall it needs to be maintained. I've been coming here since I was a little girl and the places has grown a lot. They still have the same displays and my favorite mambo fish! You'll enjoy it here even if you're not a kid.

Comparatively to many other aquariums that I had visited, this one does not have that many displays as I had expected. However, there are varieties for visitors to look at eventhough in limited numbers.

Staying in Ikebukuro

Neighborhood Profile
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.
