Comparatively to many other aquariums that I had visited, this one does not have that many displays as I had expected. However, there are varieties for visitors to look at eventhough in limited numbers.

Had a day of shopping and staying inside from the rain and this was definitely the highlight. My boyfriend and I had a lot of fun seeing a bunch of animals/fish we'd never seen before. The feeding show was fun and although boyfriend doesn't understand Japanese he laughed along with all the funny antics. Was a lot to look at,... More

My hotel concierge (we were in Shinjuku) recommended this aquarium when I asked where I could take my son on a rainy weekend morning. The Sunshine aquarium is relatively small but it has interesting, colorful displays, some live shows (penguins, seals), and even non-aquatics animals on display. It was good enough to keep my son entertained for more than an... More

A must visit in Tokyo! Wonderful dolphin shows will not let you be indifferent. Unfortunately didn't have time to visit another show. You can find different types of fish and other sea inhabitants. If I had time I would go there again!

We had a few hours to kill between meetings so we decided to head to the aquarium. They have a wide variation of fish, one of the reasons I like to visit aquariums in other countries is to see that variation and to see some unusual creatures. The jellyfish section was extremely interesting. The only thing, and someone else mentioned... More

This is not a "destination" aquarium, but our family of 4 dropped by for a couple of hours between other activities in the area and it was pleasant enough. The kids enjoyed seeing all the fish and marine life which they hadn't seen in awhile. The price was reasonable for Japan. Somewhat inconvenient from Ikebukuro, so check your subway map... More

This place was not bad value to get into, and we were really looking forward to showing our daughter around her first aquarium. Unfortunately the first thing we were greeted with was a sealion swimming round and around a narrow circuit suspended in the air- I don't know how long the animal was kept in that part for, but it... Went there on April 2013. While I was in Japan, we went to several different aquariums. Hopefully me and my friends had similar interests in that particular kind of attraction So everywhere we went, if there was an aquarium in it, we were visiting. In Tokyo, we went to 2 different aquariums, that I remember. Sunshine was one of them.... More

Staying in Ikebukuro

Neighborhood Profile
Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.
