No kidding, this is the largest fish market on the planet. Seeing it from the boat to Odaiba is one thing, visiting it is another. It's actually much bigger than I thought; but since the Japanese thinks it's not large enough (for their appetite for sushi?), they'll relocate the market to another newly reclaimed area within 5 years, despite meeting... more

The experience was awesome and this was indeed the highlight of our trip to Japan. We caught the first train (Toei Oedo Line) to Tsukiji at about 5am. The station is a 5 minute walk from our hotel Keio Plaza and the journey is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. We alighted at Tsukiji-shijo station and the market is located just... more

I and my 2 brothers went to the Tsukiji Fish Market during March 2008 and we were dumbfounded by the variety of fishes there. There were all sorts of fish, huge ones, little ones, fat ones, thin ones, colorful ones... We also saw clams so large that we did not believed they even existed. There were also a wide variety... more

I've been to the fish market probably twenty times. And I've eaten at the little sushi shops near the market that many times too. Excellent sushi... BUT... I hate to say this, but there is a scam going on in some of these sushi shops at the expense of Westerners. When you go to these sushi shops, you will typically... more

I had read that tourists were not allowed all the way inside the wholesale part of the market, but there were other non-workers walking around, and no one stopped me. Watch out for workers running around with fish and carts, but they are pretty nice and won't yell at you if you get in their way. Don't wear nice shoes... more

This has got to be the BEST fish market in the world. Not only for the massive array of every conceivable (dead and alive) sea creature you can think of, but also for the hundreds of businesses supporting the market in the surrounding area. You can buy everything from knives, to rubber boots, to rice cookers. And then there is... more

While on a visit to Tokyo I decided to go to Tsukiji market on a Tuesday morning. I had read the reviews that the place is bustling at 8 AM. When I arrived with my husband and 11yo and 10yo children, controlled chaos is a more accurate description. As we exited the subway there was a sign that warned to... more

This is a feast for the eyes. Keep the little ones close by as the workers have a job to do and motorized carts whiz by from every direction in those dark, early morning hours. The size and abundance of the sea creatures here are astounding and something I will always remember. A friendly Japanese man who spoke english explained... more

I've never before experienced anything quite like the Tsukiji Fish Market - all manner of things in tanks and on trays of ice, scooters zipping around, the amazing sushi at Sushizanmai, a restaurant at the market, the working people going about their daily business - such an eye opening experience and I'd say my highlight of Tokyo. Unmissable - get... more

Do not visit Tokyo without taking a trip to the almost daily fish market. Arrive at 5:30am (preferably after a night out drinking!) and head to the tuna auction. Wander around the various other auctions & the general fish market. Finish up with a delicious sushi breakfast & beer at one of the surrounding restaurants and retire to bed. Definitely... more
