Its a long walk up the hill though possible to take a lift. Once there it runs on several levels so be prepared to climb even within the castle grounds. Some good exhibitions and best value is the audio guide as most exhibits are marked in Spanish with off English explanations here and there. But a good morning out. Go... More

After arriving in Alicante, was pleasantly surprised to see the Castle of Santa Barbara rising up so close to the beach. We walked from the cruise terminal along the beach road and the entrance was on the front. For anyone over the age of 65 this attraction is FREE. We never showed a passport to gain entry to the lift.... More

Great setting, very interesting to wander around such a lovely location. Panoramic views of Alicante and beyond are amazing. Travelled to castle on Turibus, (hop on, hop off tour bus, €10 one off daily charge) you have an hour to tour round castle and environs before catching next bus.

A couple of tips- If you get a copy of the free local map from your hotel and plan to walk up the pay attention to the location of the stairs up to the castle as this is quite a nice walk up / down that resembles a miniature Great Wall of China. The very top has nice views and... More

We walked up to the castle and it was a relatively easy walk. Great view of Alicante and the Med. Very interesting parts to read about and well worth the trip. Nice place to stop for coffee and watch the tourists. Small booths are open for souvenirs and specialty foods.

The castle of Santa Barbara dominates the pleasant city of Alicante, which is what its builders intended, of course. Built onto (and into) a 200 metre high rock, and with a 360 degree panorama of the town and the country for 50 miles around, Santa Barbara cannot fail to stir the imagination. Happily, the castle has not been over-commercialised. Entry... More

Well worth a visit. Used the lift the travel to the top. Superb views of Alicante. A pity that exhibits are only in Spanish.

If nothing else. The views were worth it!!! Interesting site to visit with an coloured history. Reasonably priced entrance fee. Like many things to see in the city.

Amazing feat of engineering. A long tunnel brings you to the lifts which take you 2 floors up to the castle. For 2.70euro per person you can use the lift, everyone must pay except under 5 and over 65 with proof of age. You can walk up the hill as well if you wish however it is a very steep... More
