... what a memorial. First thing to hit me was the sheer size and stateliness of the memorial - then reality hit! This is only here because of the immense sacrifice of those brave men of Canada in WW1. The emotion of the figures in the memorial is overwhelming; as is walking amongst the trenches and craters from artillery shells.... more

2008 wasn't my first time visiting the Vimy Ridge memorial, but the first time since they restored the monument. The first time I visited, in 2001, I didn't realize in what bad shape it was in, but I compared photos from 2001 and 2008, and it's an incredible difference. Coming back from EuroDisney we saw Vimy sign posted and decided to stop. A truly moving and memorable site. Whether you stop for a few minutes or stay a few hours, the scale of the battle that took place here hits you. To see WWI trenches and walk within them is both moving and exciting. The earth is still torn... more

In 1917, four Canadian battalions, under Canadian command, fought together for the first time and captured Vimy Ridge.
