as usual everything in japan is well prepared and designed...explanations everywhere and you can walk for 10 or 15 km and then return with the local bus when the rains hit.

Awesome hike in early July! We drove 5.3 km beyond the hotel at Yakeyama and parked at Ishigedo (but arrive early for a space, as they are in short supply!). From there we walked a total of 8.9 km at a steady but unhurried pace. Anyone in decent physical shape can do it. The only equipment required are a backpack,... More

It was beautiful. I stayed in Yasumiya, a small town with the end terminal of the buses servicing the area (in bus schedules, Yasumiya is reflected as Towadako). The first bus out of Yasumiya is around 9am everyday, and I took that bus to Oirase. The idea is to stop at a particular stop along Oirase, hike a distance, then... More

Went there in late May by JR bus from Aomori station. The journey went uphill at first and passed some forest which was still covered with snow. The bus stopped at some of the onsen hotels which are also sightseeing spots. The bus journey is a pleasant one. We started walking from Makadoiwa and very soon we reached the pictorial... More

奥入瀬 a mountain stream, the only outlet of 十和田湖. In autumn, the trail alongside the stream that stretches from Ishigedo to Nenoguchi burns, with flames that bedazzles. Yellow, orange, brown and green of the trees burned deep into my retina.  If Autumn is about falling leaves, Oirase stream's Autumn is about fire, water and earth. Two points of departure, Aomori... No time for lunch. We brought two apples, and enjoyed it with the beautiful stream. That was very good memory.

We really want to return. The walk at the lake end is the most beautiful, filled with huge trees, waterfalls, moss and rapids. Breathtaking and easily accessible via the JR bus.

We drove through in late October, so the weather was perfect and the autumn leaves were stunning. Near the top of the gorge we stopped and went for a short walk along the stream. Our two-year-old especially enjoyed collecting fallen leaves almost bigger than her! The mountain scenery was just gorgeous. A section of the gorge road further down was... More

We visited the area as part of a family trip to Aomori-ken during Golden Week, late April to early May. Friends warned that the weather could still be quite cold at this time of the year, but we found it was perfect conditions for a gentle hike along the stream. Most people will come to visit Lake Towada, a lovely... More

If you are a naturalism, I will suggest Oirase Stream to you. It is an extend of Lake Towade in Aomori. Take 2 hours and 15 minutes bus from Morioka. Those JR pass holders are free for ride (although there is only 1 free schedule a day). Last time I stayed at Kokuminsyukusya Tawadako-Onsen, cost 6,765 yen for 1 night... More
