it has its quirks does this one, timetables are more of a guide than a stone tablet and the people manning the trains and the stations are wonderful. plenty of photo opportunities and some very interesting plans and engines . . . the future looks good.

The website shows pictures of lovely countryside on your journey. There isn't any. Unless you call rusty paint cans. An old caravan and a sewer amongst the highlights. Save your money for other heritage railways as this is the worst.

I am sure that the volunteers do an excellent and enthusiastic job in trying to maintain an historic artifact, the Guard on the train was no more than 12 years old!, and although the round trip of an hour was interesting the line does not pass through any of the beautiful countryside that is so characteristic of this part of... On our way to see the NRM in York, we stumbled across this little gem of a heritage railway. Friendly staff in a slightly worn but attractive setting. We didn't ride (time constraints) but were enthralled by the displays and the little snack bar and gift shop. Just a pound to get in, it was well worth every pence just... More

A steam train ride, run with passion. We enjoyed the short ride. Very enthusiastic people running it. Dogs allowed (so long as they remain on the floor, which is expected) It made us smile. That's a good thing.

The Embsay-Bolton steam railway is a nice little ride if you like that sort of thing. The trip back and forth was short enough for the small children to enjoy the trip without getting bored. The stations and steam engine are nicely restored and radiate that old fashion charm. The friendly conductor, who led out 4yo punch his own card... More

A great preserved line this. We arrived for the first trip of the day but we showed up a bit early - the steam train was still being stoked and cleaned! However, we handed over our tickets at the ticket office (we booked online and printed them off before visiting) and wandered around on the platform taking in the sights.... More

We decided to visit the railway again after a number of years, this was a major family attraction for us when we had a growing family and great if the weather was un certain, We visited on a Sunday and arrived at Bolton Abbey Station early on Sunday, we waitied for the Tea Room to open and had a tea... We thoroughly enjoyed the journey from Embsay to Bolton Abbey on the lovely old steam train - taking us back to our childhood!! Lovely journey to take children or grandchildren and only a shortish walk at Bolton Abbey station takes you to Bolton Abbey with all its walks along the river and the old priory.
