When I planned our 17 day trip to Transylvania my first and second thought was that this was something that could be skipped. A 45 minute drive each way from Sighetu the time did not seem worth it . I finally decide well everybody goes neither my partner nor the other couple will forgive me if we skip it. Though... More

This place is a bit overrated. Yes, the cemetery is old and unique but the messages on the crosses are not that merry. The "mother in law cross" is the funny one, but it is near the new church, which is under construction, so the access to this cross is not very easy. The cemetery is rather small so you... More

This is a beautiful and colorful cementery. The blue crosses and the scripts and images on them are so original I would like to be buried there when I die! It is a very nice setting and unfortunately when we visited the church was being renovated, but judging by what we saw, this place is going to be even more... More

Unique blue wooden crosses depicting the life and trade of the deceased. Very pretty church and steeple in centre of these blue painted headstone crosses. So unusual and an interesting story on each cross about the life of the deceased.

The traveler encounters here, at Săpânţa, an original and joyful vision about the life and the death. After Pr. Grigore Riţiu priest's idea, in 1930, the gifted folk painter and poet Ioan Stan Pătraş decorates between 1935-1977 all wooden tombs at Săpânţa cemetery with naive paintings and satirical texts. His creation was continued after 1977's by Pătraş's disciple, Dumitru Pop... More

One does not normally think of describing a cemetery as beautiful, but this one is. The wood carved and painted headstones tell wonderful stories of those placed there.

We enjoyed spending time looking at the monuments in this cemetery. There is a fee to get in but is worth it. The humor and tragedy of the people buried there is pictured on the crosses even if you aren't able to read the Romanian.

Was absolutely amazing to find this place so colorful and joyful it being a cemetery. Just by walking between the crosses and reading all the stories that are funny, sarcastic and sad in the same time, you really get to feel life's irony. A handy thing is a translator or a dictionary as all stories are in Romanian.

Even though it was lashing rain this cemetery is a joy to behold! Everyone buried here gets a painting about their daily lives. There's farmers, weavers, housewives, dressmakers etc.etc all with their professions painted on crosses. It really feels like a happy place!
