It's not easy to get to Balos Beach. The road up the peninsula is unpaved and quite a mission. It takes about thirty minutes driving to get to the tip. Then you have to walk down to the beach. I imagine in the summer months when there is no wind, it's incredible. But the wind at the top of that... More

The road continues about 8k past the Balos hotel. It is rough, no doubt about it, and your hired Micra probably won't make it, but the beach at the end is sooooo worth it. Bags of room. So worth the drive.

The road was rocky and steep, our rental Fiat had a difficult time, so I got out and walked. I enjoy hiking, but others may complain about it being difficult if they do not enjoy walking up and down rocky hills. Just bring the proper shoes! Once you see the view of Balos though, you will forget how tiring it... More

It is just pure paradise on earth. The color of the water and the white sand divine. The road is rough. I am not much into hiking so the hike down and definitely the hike back up was grueling. I would only take the boat in if I came again. Less stress, more pleasure.

This is a view of a lifetime. The azure Mediterranean gives it's color away gradually as the sea lightens to translucent blue until it hits the shore. The road to the beach is a treacherous one, involving at least 90 minutes in the car from Chania, then a very narrow, terribly rocky and difficult meandering road up a mountain. Make... More

We took a car route from Rethymnon. It's about 2 hour drive on the road and then about 40min on rough road (partially paved and pretty narrow and steep). The nature park entrance fee is reasonable. After that there is pretty steep walk down to the lagoon itself - can't take stroller with you and if you have health problem... More

Excellent views, crystal clear waters, a really amazing place to go. We went there with the boat in order to avoid the bad road, which was on the one hand good. Although, on the other hand the time we could spend there it was restricted.I wish i could stay a whole day. The good thing is that even if it... More

This was a place of indescribable beauty, but the last 7km of the road was hair raising and we almost turned back. We went in late november so it was too cold to swim, not the water but the outside air temp was cool and windy. Plus we were afraid of getting caught on that road in the dark with... More

Words and my pictures cannot do justice to this spectacular, absolutely stunning lagoon/beach. I don't quite know how to describe this place - it is a beauty of nature. The warm, super crystalline waters that range in color from turquoise to blue to white against the mountains in the distance is a sight for sore and the only word that... More

Balos is a bit of a trek to reach, the road is rough but passable in an ordinary car so long as you take it slowly. The walk across from carpark is quite steep down at the end, the beach nice and divided up into a number of smaller areas which in the Autumn meant you could be on your... More
