This was a day trip out of Rethymno for my family in early November (2 teenagers, spouse and myself). From the last town before making one's way to Balos, one drives along a dirt road (it's safe, but a dirt road nonetheless) for about 12 km, along a cliff (no guardrails, cliff height between 100m to 200m from sea below).... Definately worth the visit , but get ready for a good hike if you are visiting through the off road way vs. the ferry. I would say we are glad that we did the off road option - as it was more of an adventure and we really got to appreciate the beuaty and scenery of Balos Beach from the... More

Visited several times over the years. Easily joint best beach in Crete totally accessible by car. It is a hike at the end but our kids managed so anyone can. Snorkeling, beach and lagoon rival anything I have seen in the rest of the world. This must be in the top 50 of worlds best beahes heaven. Natural and unspoilt.... More

It is not easy to get to the lagoon/beach level, especially during the off season when the tourisitc support infrastructure of this Northwestern Region of Crete leaves a lot to be desired.... After arriving by car at the Balos Beach Hotel---which is only open from April through October---you will leave the paved road and travel about 9 km at a... More

Nothing can compare to this place! Do visit! The castle has a breathtaking view of the gulf and the water there reminds of the most exotic places you want to visit!

Balos beach is in a reserve place, not so easy to reach since at the end of a gravel road. At the end of a 15 min drive on gravel you reach a parking lot were you can leave your car. To reach the beach you need now to walk 20-30 min (depending on you speed), going down is easy... More

This was just amazing, and so worth the drive from Chania out to the middle of nowhere. The photos can't do it justice. Driving on the gravel road was totally fine in a tiny rental car - the only issue was other tourists who were not confident in their driving causing a huge slow-down; so it took longer than it... Pls don't go there via land if you can't walk long distance. Maybe try take the boats. The uphill and downhill roads are very difficult to walk. It is about 1 km but feels like 10 km. the view and experience are really worth it thou.

Wonderful beach with its pink sandy beaches and warm waters. We had parked at the top and walked down which is a really long way because you have the return journey when everyone is very tired and its all up hill! You can buy food and drinks. Its best to get there early cause its very popular. They do boat trips from the... More
