My 2 star rating is only based on the amount of people there! It was absolutely packed! People were lying on the beach like Sardines! Definately not my idea of holiday! If you don't like crowds, don't go! To be fair though, Balos is absolutely stunning, just too busy!

Four friends and I visited Balos by car. We didn't pay for sun loungers, we just used beach towels on the soft sand. The view is great (see attached photo), and the water is warm and nice to 'bob and gossip' in. As we went in August it was very crowded with coach trips of other tourists which was a... More

Beautiful place, amazing view BUT...overcrowded. We went there by car and get there about 2 hours before the trips of people. It was like in Bahamas but a bit cloudy ( early morning). Once people got there - it was overcrowded and noisy. 2 sunbeds and umbrella cost 7 eur! if you come with a trip it is quite difficult... More

A beautiful beach lagoon, but leave early if you want sun loungers. For those of you who are fit, drive and take the long walk down to the beach which is very tough on the return journey, the benefit being you beat the ferry and have first choice of loungers. The is one small cafe which gets busy so take... More

My family made the adventurous car journey along the bumpy un Tarmac ed road to this wonderful beach. Unlike other contributors I would recommend the car and walk route because you get the stunning views and sense of adventure of walking and discovering something you can't drive to. I would recommend you get to the top car park by 11... More

In my opinion better than any other beach in Crete by far, including Elafonnisi. Don't take the ferry. Drive, walk, bicycle, or take a private boat so that you can stay longer - after the big boats have left - and there is no crowd left. Well worth it. We drove, the road is unpaved, but it is very doable.... More

If there was a 'come to Crete' poster - Balos beach would feature. Its one of the most beautiful beaches with white sand and two sea pools which you can walk accross. If you want to drive 5 km up a cliff edge on rubble then walk down the other side of the cliff 2 km with no shelter from... More

It´s hard to see this place after Elafonisi beach (that is almost paradise in my opinion). This place is nice, we did it by the boat and went first to Gramvousa (beware of the sea Urchins in Gramvousa beach). After the Gramvousa fortress visit we head to Balos, the beach was stoney and difficult to put and umbrella, also to... More

An amazing lagoon, well worth a visit. We went by private boat and beat all the tourist trips so it was lovely and quiet. Take goggles or a snorkle as there are some great fish to see!

The beach is perfect and was well worth the difficult trip by car as the roard is not good. Go by boat if you don't mind getting at the beach at noon and with miriad of other tourists. Go by car, preferably rent an off road vehicle, as early in the morning as possible in order to be able to... More
