First of all, this beach is amazing and you have to go if you are in western Crete. I was concerned about how to get there after reading the reviews about the road conditions. We ended up driving and were very happy with that decision. As other reviewers have stated you start by heading west on the main highway through... More

Extremely beautiful nature, very nice beach. If you go by car, might have a hard time walking the 30min distance to the beach, though you can as well use the donkey service. It's a great place to spend time, but get's very crowded with people after the ship comes around 2pm.

If you have a rented car, then it is better to drive to the pier in Kissamos to take the boat to Gramvoussa as it is not a particularly long or difficult drive, plus you get to visit Gramvoussa and Balos on the same trip. Parking is ample and free on the pier. From there, buy a ticket to the... More

Beautiful. Stunning. Amazing. Highly recommend if you are fit and able to drive and then walk down (hike back up) as the view on your approach is unbeatable. You won't get this if you take the boat. Plus it allows you the flexibility to come/go at your leisure. There is a toll (1 Euro per person) to help with removal... More

It is quite difficult to access the beach, first due to the road conditions and once the car is parked there are about 30 min walk to the beach, but it is worth it! We went there quite late and it was almost empty and enjoy it more. Nice and clean beach, one of my favouries!

Took the Gramvousa-Balos boat service. Gramvousa has crystal waters (though look out for the urchins and the stones as you wade in and out!), the walk up to the castle is tiresome (at noon), but the views are worth it. Or you can just lie down at the beach while most people will climb up and back down (they will... More

I must say its absolutely beautiful, that being said be aware if you choose to drive it is not an easy drive! I don't consider myself a scaredy cat, though I know I'm not as brave as some, but for me it was nerve raking. Its gravel for the last 5 miles or so and its on the edge of... More

2 ways to get there. By boat or by car. Boat from Kissamos, but we chose to drive. You drive past Kissamos harbour through some narrow streets until you come to the National Park. Pay your 1 euro per person and then drive 8km along a dirt/cinder/stone track that will shake your bones. Keep your car windows shut to keep... More

Extra-ordinary place. Elafonisi beach looks average after you visit Balos. Its hard access and position in the north-western-most angle of Crete rejects tourist hordes so far. However there are 3 boats a day which will add some 500 people, but dotn worry, its a huge area, so you dont feel totally crowded. I highly recommend arrival by car: 1. you... More
