Shouin-Shrine is dedicated a mentor "Shouin Yoshida" whose students became reformers of modern-Japan. This temple is located in the same property with his academy "Shouka-Son Juku". Renting bicycle may be convenient to get there and then go to "Toukou-Shrine" which is a family temple of Lords Mouri.

The shrine is at the back of the compound and as with most shrines in Japan well maintained with great statues and icons on display. as it is in the Shoka Village you get to see a lot more than just the shrine. I really liked the small shrine just next to it.

Very visual, experiential and educational about the time when so called 'rebels' insisted to open Japan to foreigners. Fantastic way to get to know the philosophy of the great thinkers of its time. Definitely worth a visit if you have an interest in Japanese history.
