I didn`t have the opportunity to visit the samurai houses or don the kimono, but I did have a lovely time walking around with friends and imagining the town as it was long ago. The town is well preserved. Have the "mikan" (orange) ice cream....it was so unbelievably fresh!

We made our own excursion to this little jewel of a town off of a cruise ship as an alternative to the Beppu onsens. We stumbled on the description of the kimono experience when searching for things to do in the area and sent an email telling the kimono shop the date and approximate time that we would arrive. Since the castle tower is rebuilt, and made of iron, we cannot feel history. However, since it stands in along the seashore, the scene of the castle seen from the sea is beautiful. Kitsuki on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture is rather unknown to most tourists. I went there during Golden Week and it wasn't crowded at all. It's a nice place to escape the crowds during high season. It's a lovely, quite castle town. As far as I know it's the only castle town that's build like that. Not flat, but... More

We were a little short on time our last trip to Japan but I wanted to visit Kitsuki and see the Samurai Houses. Fortunately my daughter who is living in Beppu befriended a lovely Japanese lady who knew the area, drove us there and was a wonderful guide. Reading information about this town it was often referred to as "little... More

It is beautiful with old buildings everywhere, some were even built in the Meiji era or older. It gives us a different experience of the culture..
