It is one of my favorite places in Japan... Magic atmosphere in an amazingly beautiful natural setting.

A very impressive shrine along the beautiful Miyazaki coastline dedicated to the first mythical emporer of Japan. Requires a lot of walking up/down stairways

What an absolutely stunning place to build a shrine, in a cave beside the ocean behind massive and very interesting rock formations standing like sentinels in the water. The wild ocean has been pounding away here for eternity to create this natural masterpiece. There is a bit of a walk and some steep steps but worth the effort. It dates back... More

Mysterious shrine in natural cave is unique and special. Staircases were built along the rim of coast, leading to the main shrine. The solemn shrine with splashes from 5 meter tall sea waves hitting against the shore was spectacular and was the most special one among all shrines I visited so far. Pay 100 yen for 5 pieces of luck... More

We made our way to Nichinan and this was one of the planned stops. Perched right at the coast with the washboards at the entrance, the views are simply breath-taking. The walk to the temple requires a decent on a rather steep flight of steps. As the saying goes, when in Nichinan...make a necessary pit stop here. No regrets.

It takes some walk off the road. But once you are there, you'd fully enjoy the shrine and view of the ocean front. The story goes like this: "a human fell in love with a lady, but did not know that she was the daughter of the Dragon King of the Ocean. They stayed in the cave and the wife... More

I absolutely love this shrine. Whenever people visit or move here I take them to Udo. It is a bit out of the way, but the view and scenery are worth it. I really love shrines and I think Udo is a prime example of a unique shrine. The fact that it is in a cave on the ocean sold... More

Having seen many Shinto Shrines in Japan, after awhile they can get a bit repetitive (same goes for cathedral in Europe if you see one after another after another). Yet the Udo Shrine was a very pleasant surprise since it location on the gorgeous Nichinan coast (dramatic rock outcroppings, crashing waves, and the "giant's washboard" appearance of the rocky costline)and...
