It's like entering a surreal indoor shopping mall with shallow shop windows full of animals on display in these small spaces, with out natural air or light. Two male Small Clawed Otters were racing round endlessly in less than 2 square metres of 'shop window'. They have been separated from the females 'because they were breeding' according to the keepers.... More

I loved it! The whole island has a plethora of activities, shops, and shrines to keep your attention; but if you go when it's hot, it's nice to have an inside activity. The aquarium is a reasonably priced stop to get some air conditioning and view the water wildlife. All of the displays were beautiful. There were shows and demonstrations... More

Despite not speaking Japanese we were able to understand the presentations. Handlers really understood the animals and the Aquarium was very clean and well presented.

There were multiple areas of the aquarium, starts off with fish and small animals including crabs, etc, done really well- the tanks are environmentally enriched and very interesting information with them - worth seeing this part! The sad part is the larger animals, particularly the sea lions, penguins, otters and porpoise tanks. Minimal environmental stimulation - the most was two... More

If you enjoy Japanese aquariums, do not miss this one. Worth the time to spend more than an hour, so have lunch. Really nice, clean new exhibits, with a good collection of Inland Sea animals.

If you are concerned about the welfare of the mammals here, then don't go! The displays of fish and various local sea life are very interesting. I especially enjoyed the large tank with the oyster bed. This is informative since you see so many floating rafts on your way to Miyajma, if you didn't already guess that they were for... More

We were another family that went because our daughter loves aquariums. It is recently remodeled. The displays are well presented. It is smaller and more intimate. It is good for a one or two hour visit. The focus is on local sea life, which made it worthwhile for a visit to Miyajima. Otherwise it isn't what I would think to... More

Travel with kids involves compromise. One of the things I think is important is including a few choices that they really want to do, hence my 11 year old daughter's desire to visit the aquarium led to us spending a morning here. And, I have to say, it was pretty good. The building has relatively recently been completely renovated so... More

We visited Miyajima in July, on a very hot and humid day. The aquarium was a nice break from the heat. We went toward the end of the day, and it wasn't crowded at all. The aquarium is small, but we enjoyed seeing different species of sea creatures especially the ones that live in the surrounding area. My favorite was... More

I visited this aquarium with my brother. The beluga that people think is saying "hello" looked to us like it was screaming for an escape from its TINY, TINY enclosure. My brother -- who is quite tough -- and I both left in tears. Anytime I read a story on belugas, I think of the pitiful creatures in Miyajima. Don't... More
