After a moving and thought-provoking trip to Hiroshima, Miyajima Aquarium is at the other end of the scale of visitor experiences, but seeing Japanese children enjoying themselves at the sea lion display and the various indoor displays was a good antidote to life's bigger issues. A good option particularly when it's pouring down and foggy on Miyajima and the rope-way... More

Good place to drop in a visit when touring Miyajima. They cater for young children with hands on display and holding starfish. There are some excellent displays of sea creatures in different environments and some that I haven't seen before. Of humorous note is the in tank fish feeding by a diver wearing a deer costume! Haha only in Japan.

The Miyajima Public Aquarium is located on Miyajima Island (duh) about 1.2 km from the pier (where the ferry drops you). You could catch a cab (about ¥700),but we opted for a leisurely walk to the Aquarium (which was a very pleasant decision) and cabbed it on the way back. I'd recommend the cab ride just for the experience of... More

The fish displays were beautiful and very intriguing, and that's why I'm rating this place with a four out of five. I was able to see several species with which I was unfamiliar, and the information available on these animals is detailed while still being concise. However, like some on here, I struggle with watching mammals and birds in captivity.... More

I went to Miyajima Island to see the shrine and the scenery, but saw a sign for the aquarium and decided to pop in. The staff was very kind. (I even dropped some money and they picked it up and handed it to me). There are a lot of attractions -- check out the dolphins, penguins and otters! The first... More

Miyajima Aquarium could be great. Very friendly stuff, nice location, just the right size for hour or two, big amount of different kinds of sea creatures, quite nice sealion show few times a day and very nice restaurant. That said, I found similar problem like quite a few of other reviewers. The living conditions of larger animals are horrible. The... More

My favorite thing here was the jelly fish tank. They have lights underneath them so that they glow on the black background. The seal show is cute, even if you do not speak Japanese. They have tubes that travel across the ceiling so that the otters play right above your head. Well work the short walk over from the shrine!

I loved it! The whole island has a plethora of activities, shops, and shrines to keep your attention; but if you go when it's hot, it's nice to have an inside activity. The aquarium is a reasonably priced stop to get some air conditioning and view the water wildlife. All of the displays were beautiful. There were shows and demonstrations... More

Despite not speaking Japanese we were able to understand the presentations. Handlers really understood the animals and the Aquarium was very clean and well presented.

There were multiple areas of the aquarium, starts off with fish and small animals including crabs, etc, done really well- the tanks are environmentally enriched and very interesting information with them - worth seeing this part! The sad part is the larger animals, particularly the sea lions, penguins, otters and porpoise tanks. Minimal environmental stimulation - the most was two... More
