This lake holds a lot of fond memories for me, as a family we used to spend a week holidaying at the northern end year in and year out for close on 15 years, the first visit was back in the mid 1980's though the holiday's I remember the most are all in the 90's, as such I spent a... More

It was very peaceful, we were the only walkers on that particular park of the lake on the morning, lovely quiet area with just cows for company in places. Well signposted with public footpath pointers.

Very peaceful - didn't see anyone else at all. We walked down from the Hall which has its own access. Quite a walk from the hall but it is a nice lake. Has some nice views but nothing like Windermere and Coniston - this is probably the least known of the Lakes although it is one of the larger bodies... More

Bassenthwaite isn't one of the well-known or very popular Lakes, probably because it doesn't have the dramatic scenery or pretty views like the others. Also there aren't many places with good access to the Lakeside for walks. However there are lots of places around the Lake worth visiting - there's great walking starting from Dodd Wood (plus a chance to... More

We stayed on the west side of the lake, near to the sailing club, and whilst picturesque we did struggle to get to the side of the lake. There was one small section but we only found this by accident! Very quiet though and great wildlife!

The lake is worth a stop and has breathtaking views over the fells and surrounding area. The place near the top end of the lake was limited in walks etc, but it did provide a nice view whilst picnicking. There were several young lads fishing in the lake and looked like they were having fun and a bit of success.... More

We found this to be the quietest lake we came across during our visit to the northern lakes. It was less 'touristy' than the others which made for a relaxing and peaceful walk.

Went for a walk down to the sailing club but couldn't get any closer to the lake. Drove past the following morning, beautiful views

It's a lovely lake, quite small and good for a landmark, trying to find Bassenthwaite, but in the Lake District in my opinion it is one of the smaller, less dramatic lakes. Happy for others to disagree with me.

As it is the in the north it is an easy trip from Scotland, to feel you have had some time away, without going too far! There are a few hotels/bars around the outside in small villages, along with some great paths and walks. Another bonus of its northern geography is that it is far less busy that the central... More
