Brooks Falls

We went to Katmai July 21, 2007 and saw easily 30-40 bears. The park rangers do a good job keeping bears and visitors apart in many places but the 1 mile trail from the lakeshore to brooks falls is unguided and it was common to see bears in the woods on either side of the trail. 2 bears once "chased"... more

Exciting. Trip of a lifetime. Pricey, but worth every penny. Cabins have all the comforts, but are not plush or luxurious....who cares! You're essentially camping, and a bear may sleep 15 feet from your front door. If you are prissy, you won't like it. If you are adventurous, you'll be in heaven. Many of your fellow guests will be professional... more

This is a destination fishing lodge but there is plenty of wildlife and sites nearby if fishing is not your only interest. The fishing, however, was excellent. You can bring all your stuff, or nothing. The Lodge will supply you with rod, reel, waiters, boots, etc. This was extremely convenient for those in our group that had never fly fished... more

This was one of the great experiences in life but before you go know that this is not a luxury vacation. The trip is uncomfortable but the inconvenience of getting there is probably what makes Katmia a bear refuge. The cabins are rustic, dark and cramped, the food is not for those who live for fine dinning. This place is... more

Sept. 9-11th, 2006 I slept at Brooks campground for 2 nights. The views of the nearby water iare lovely, expecially the sunsets. It is surrounded by an electric fence to keep the bears out. The bears walk along the shoreline less than 50 yrs from the campground's electric fence. It is about a 10 minute leisurely walk from the lodge.... more

We stayed at Brooks Lodge for 3 nights in mid-September. Our arrival was delayed -some of the flights from Anchorage arrived at King Salmon late, and Katmai Air didn't seem to be prepared at all, and were overrun with passengers waiting to fly to Brooks Camp. We ended up waiting in their fly-infested office (with no bathroom!) for about 2... more

We cannot thank our travel agents Heidi & Melinda at All Alaska Tours, Pen Air, Katmai Air, the Rangers and the folks at Brooks Lodge for giving us a wonderful once in a life time experience. The Bears were every where, starting as we were landing (you can see the bears lying on the beach) and ending when they kept... more

The only reason to stay here would be to see the bears in peak season. I was there the first week of September and saw dozens of bears. I loved the scenery and wildlife but the accommodations, staff and management were awful. We paid 650 dollars a night for a filthy room with 4 bunk beds, the sheets had stains... more

There are only two places to stay when visiting Brooks Falls and that would be at the lodge (16 units) or at the campground (16 sites). I chose the former as traveling across the continent with all my camping gear as well as my camera gear would be a bit cumbersome. The cabins are very rustic – 2 bunk bends,... more

We went to Brooks Lodge at the end of July with my parents when they came to Alaska to visit and we had a wonderful time! It was expensive, but it was so worth it! The rooms weren't great - 4 bunks beds and a bathroom, but it was clean and it didn't matter. It was comfortable and we could... more

Canoeing this 80 mile loop is THE way to experience the Alaskan wilderness! It is not, however, for a beginner. It can be rainy with poor visibility, as it was the first 2 - 3 days of my paddle, and made orienteering the Bay of Islands difficult. The portage trail is long and strenuous. If you have the extra cash,... more

I was able to not only visit but work in Katmai Nat'l Park in the 2003 summer. It exceeded my expectations and found it truly amazing to be a part of brown bear habitat. If you enjoy any aspect of the great outdoors you will love Katmai. Make sure you bring lots of film and a free spirit. more

Amazing fishing on the Alagnak River...Great location, good diversity of fishing options, outstanding guides. One of the younger guides, Lance was an incredible source of knowledge on fish and general stream life, not too mention a fantastic guide. Charlie, was proffessional and a whole lot of fun. You just cant beat catching 50 trout in a day and 3 over... more

Just returned from a trip to Alaska. It's hard to say what was the highlight, but Brooks Falls is definitely in the running. There were a total of 10 Brown bears feasting on the Salmon. It was incredible! We were there in the late afternoon on 7/21/01. Since it was the late afternoon, there wasn't a crowd. We stood there... more
