About South African Airways

South African Airways is the flag carrier and largest airline of South Africa. South African Airways traces its rootsback to 1934 when the government of South Africa took over Union Airways. The airline has its headquarters and operates its hub at O.R. Tambo International Airport, near Johannesburg. A leading carrier in Africa, South African Airways serves 20 destinations across the continent in addition to destinations in South Africa. Mango is South African Airways’ low-cost carrier that flies to several destinations within South Africa.

Class of Service

South African Airways provides two classes of service on its flights.

Business Class

Business Class passengers enjoy lounge access, amenity kits, fully lie-flat seats on South African Airways’ A330s, A340-200s and A340-600s, angled lie-flat seats on its A340-300s and recliner seats on its A319s and B737s. Passengers traveling in Business Class also enjoy entertainment systems with audio and video on demand on A330, A340-300 and A340-600 aircraft, personal television screens on A340-200s and entertainment on shared overhead screens on short haul aircraft.

Economy Class

Economy Class passengers enjoy amenity kits on long haul flights, entertainment systems with audio and video ondemand on A330, A340-300 and A340-600 aircraft and shared entertainment on overhead screens on A340-200 aircraft and short haul aircraft.

Food and Drink

Complimentary food and beverage service, including South African wine, is provided on all flights in all classes of service. The menus vary depending on the length of the flight and time of day. South African Airways is the first airline to be granted honorary membership to the South African Chefs’ Association.

Entertainment

Entertainment systems with audio and video on demand are available at each seat on South African Airways’ A330s, A340-300s and A340-600s. Onboard A340-200 aircraft, Business Class passengers enjoy personal televisions with six channels of movies. Economy Class passengers enjoy entertainment on overhead screens on South African Airways’ A340-200s, A319s and B737s.

In-Flight Technology

There are 115V AC power outlets that accept a two-pin European-type plug at each Business Class seat on South Africa Airways’ A340s and 737s. USB ports are also available at each Business Class seat on A330-200 aircraft.

South African Airways’ fleet includes the following aircraft types*:

A319-100
South African Airways has more than ten A319s in its fleet, and they can seat up to 120 passengers in Business Class and Economy Class.
A330-200
There are approximately six A330s in South African Airways’ fleet, and they have fully lie-flat seats inBusiness Class.
A340-200, -300, -600
South African Airways’ fleet has more than 20 A340s, which have Business Class and Economy Class cabins. The Business Class seats on the A340-200 and -600 are fully lie-flat seats, while the Business Classseats on the A340-300 are angled lie-flat seats.
B737-800
There are more than 20 737s in South African Airways’ fleet, and they feature recliner seats in Business Class.

Customer Loyalty Program

Voyager is South Africa Airways’ frequent flyer loyalty program.

  • You can earn miles by flying South African Airways, Star Alliance airlines and other airline partners.
  • Miles can also be accrued by purchasing products or services from numerous participating hotel and car partners and by using a Voyager credit card.
  • Miles can be redeemed for travel and other awards.
  • Miles are valid for three years after the year in which they were earned, on March 31st of that year. Miles will not expire and will be carried over to the next year if you flew a minimum of 5,000 Tier Miles on South African Airways only or spent R60,000 on your Voyager credit card in the preceding calendar year.
  • Membership levels are Blue, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Lifetime Platinum. Blue is the entry level for all Voyager members. Silver status may be attained by flying 25,000 Tier Miles, 25 Sectors of 0-999 miles, 6 Sectors of1,000-3,900 miles or 3 Sectors of 4,000 miles or more in one calendar year. Gold status may be attained by flying 50,000 Tier Miles, 50 Sectors of 0-999 miles, 12 Sectors of 1,000-3,900 miles or 6 Sectors of 4,000 miles or more inone calendar year. Platinum status may be attained by flying 100,000 Tier Miles, 100 Sectors of 0-999 miles, 24 Sectors of 1,000-3,900 miles or 12 Sectors of 4,000 miles or more in one calendar year. Lifetime Platinum membership is attained by earning 100,000 Tier Miles on South African Airways flights only or obtaining the required Sector criteria for Platinum Status for six consecutive years.
    • Perks for Silver, Gold, Platinum and Lifetime Platinum members include bonus miles, lounge access and an additional baggage allowance.
    • Silver members have Star Alliance Silver status when traveling on Star Alliance airlines.
    • Gold, Platinum and Lifetime Platinum members are recognized as Star Alliance Gold members when traveling on Star Alliance airlines and have access to Star Alliance members’ owned lounges with the Star Alliance Gold logo at the entrance.
