About Air India

Air India is the flag carrier of India and is owned by the Indian government. Air India’s predecessor, Tata Sons Ltd., was founded in 1932. In 2007 Air India and Indian Airlines merged to create one state-run airline. From its hubs in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, Air India flies to North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, as well as domestically throughout India. Air India’s headquarters is located in Mumbai.

Class of Service

Air India offers up to three classes of service on its long haul flights.

First Class

Passengers traveling in First Class enjoy fully lie-flat seats, complimentary meal and beverage service, lounge access and amenity kits. Air India provides complimentary limousine service to and from the airport for First Class passengers traveling on select routes and fare types.

Executive Class

Executive Class passengers enjoy fully lie-flat seats on Air India’s B777s, angled lie-flat seats on its B747s and recliner seats on other aircraft. Passengers also enjoy lounge access, complimentary meal and beverage service and amenity kits. Air India provides complimentary limousine service to and from the airport for Executive Class passengers traveling on select routes and fare types.

Economy Class

Economy Class passengers receive complimentary meal and beverage service. In addition, on select aircraft, Economy Class passengers enjoy seatback entertainment or entertainment on overhead screens.

Food and Drink

All passengers enjoy complimentary meal and beverage service on long haul flights.


Air India’s B777-300ERs have seatback entertainment systems in all classes with 350 hours of audio and video ondemand, featuring movies, games, news and music. Air India is in the process of replacing overhead screens on its other B777 and B747 aircraft with seatback entertainment systems with audio and video on demand.

In-Flight Technology

First Class and Executive Class passengers on Air India’s B747s and B777s have 110V AC power ports at their seats. USB ports are available in all classes on Air India’s B777-300ERs.

A319, A320 and A321
There are more than 55 A319s, A320s and A321s in the Air India fleet. Air India’s A320s and A321s have two classes of service, while its A319s have a single class of service.
The A330s in Air India’s fleet are operated with two classes of service.
There are approximately 5 747s in Air India’s fleet.
B777-200LR and -300ER
Air India operates approximately 20 B777s, which are operated with three classes of service.
The CRJ-700s in Air India’s fleet can seat up to 70 passengers.
ATR 42-320
Air India operates more than 5 ATR 42s, which can seat up to 48 passengers.

Flying Returns is Air India’s frequent flyer loyalty program.

  • You can earn miles by flying Air India and other airline partners.
  • You can also earn miles by using a co-branded credit card.
  • Miles can be redeemed for travel awards.
  • Miles expire on the last day of the 36th month after the miles were accrued.
  • Membership levels are Silver Edge, Golden Edge and Maharajah Club. These membership levels are attained by obtaining 25,000, 50,000 and 75,000 status miles, respectively, on qualifying flights in a 365-day period.
    • Perks for Silver Edge, Golden Edge and Maharajah Club members include upgrade privileges and mileage bonuses.Golden Edge and Maharajah Club members also have lounge access.
  • You can buy miles for a fee and pool miles with your spouse.
